The intensification of agriculture has generated a degradation of the soils in the agroecosystems of the humid and sub-humid pampas of Argentina, having effects on the physical and chemical properties of the soil, which are evidenced by processes of loss of porosity, a decrease in organic matter (MO), water storage and movement of water and nutrients. In this work that studies the soils of the Cuarto river basin and minor streams of the central and southwestern region of the province of Córdoba, three objectives were proposed, one of a methodological nature to determine the recovery factors of total organic carbon (TOC) and its fractions by the Walkley Black methodology, comparing between the different methodologies available for the determination. The second objective describes the current levels of TOC and its particulate organic carbon fractions (COP) and organic carbon bound to the mineral fraction (COfm), subjected to different production systems, through the study of soil indicators related to CO that indicate levels of degradation that compromise sustainable productivity. With the last objective, the accumulated effect was evaluated in a long-term trial of pure agricultural rotation, with different tillage systems on the content of total CO and its fractions in the superficial layer. To carry out the first two objectives, three production systems (land use) were used: Agricultural (Agr), cattle alfalfa grazing (Gan) and pasture with permanent grasses (GanPP) of 109 plots in the Cuarto River basin and minor streams. To meet the last objective, corresponding to a long-term trial, soil was worked with three tillage systems: direct seeding (SD), reduced tillage (LR) and two levels of fertilization: fertilized (F) and unfertilized (NF). The results showed that when the TOC recovery factors and its fractions were determined, they were different from the one defined by the Walkley Black methodology. In the determination of CO, a high correlation was found between the W&B, muffle furnace (LOI) and automatic carbon analyzer (used as reference) methodologies. The recovery factor found using the W&B methodology was approximately 70%, less than the 77% reported by the author for that methodology, with differences for soil fractions which were greater than and less than 100 μm by wet sieving. Permanent agriculture as the dominant productive system on the soils of the Cuarto River basin affected the CO levels in the soils. Significant differences were found in the TOC levels of the soils with different production systems, with the Agr and Gan uses having the lowest content. Differences were identified in the CO fractions depending on use, with the COP fraction >100 μm being the most sensitive to changes in use. The different land uses also modified water properties and global biological activity (ABG) resulting in greater use of GanPP, this being a good indicator since it showed sensitivity to the land use system in the short term. Soil management techniques and strategies, through tillage and fertilization, modified the TOC content and its fractions. In the interaction between fertilizer and tillage, differences were only observed in SDF, being SD and LC NF the worst interaction in relation to the TOC content of the soil. The CO fractions did not present differences between the tillage systems, both for COPg and COPf, but differences in the organic fractions between F and NF were found indeed. Fertilization also played an important role here, since its interaction with the tillage allowed for an increase in the CO levels in the conservationist systems.es_AR
