Tribology is the science that studies friction, wear, lubrication and the design of surfaces that interact in relative motion. In recent decades, polymer matrix composite materials have been increasingly used for high-demand tribological applications. Recently, new composite polymers have been developed with the incorporation of a wide variety of filler reinforcers and lubricants, both micro and nanometric, to ensure proper tribological behavior for key applications. This doctoral thesis deals with the study of the frictional and wear behavior of composite epoxy matrix lubricant coatings, with particles of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and bismuth sulfide III (Bi2S3), in sliding contact, low speed and variable loads, for reduced time applications. The purpose is to provide information on the way in which the action of the lubricating particles affects the wear and the coefficient of friction, individually and together. Likewise, the study of the influence of surface topographic characteristics on tribological performance is also addressed. Initially, the present study involved the formulation of different compositions with two different epoxy matrices. Also, different forms of elaboration were evaluated in order to guarantee the most optimal application in the form of coatings. The chemical and mechanical characterization, both of the materials used and of the finished coatings, was carried out by means of different techniques of microscopy, spectroscopy and hardness tests. The tribological properties were evaluated in block-on-ring tests, of variable loads and low speed, in order to determine the wear and coefficient of friction. The results of the tribological tests carried out on the coatings show different behaviors for each epoxy matrix resin, but the main influence on wear and friction behavior is focused on the type and percentage of the lubricating particles fillers. The wear for the coatings with MoS2 is reduced by 40%, compared to the epoxy resin without lubricants, while when combined with Bi2S3 a reduction of 80% was registered. The friction behavior of the coatings with 10% Bi2S3 showed coefficients of friction less than 0.1 for short periods of 3 seconds. The combination of both solid lubricants competes in friction with those that only have MoS2 with equal weight composition. This behavior is repeated in coatings made with two different epoxy resins. On the other hand, regardless of the composition, a 60% increase in wear resistance in sliding contact was registered on the adhesiveness of the coating with higher roughness. The wear mechanisms were analyzed from the evaluation of the wear surfaces, both in the block and ring coating, by means of conventional, confocal and electronic optical microscopy techniques.es
