This study approaches the characterization of American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) populations in te inner and middle zone of the Bahía Blanca estuary, establishing on these the potential environmental conditioning as a consequence of the antropic impact produced intehe region. Between September and December 2008 and 2009. biological studies were carried out on the populatios of the American oystercatcher. Parallel there were carried out two-monthly samplings of two marine invertebrates prey items of the American oystercatcher inthe same study sites, in which the concentrations of some potentially toxic heavy metals were measured. Also there were gathered some eggs of American oystercatchers in which the concentration of the same metals was also measured.Respect of the American oystercatcher popula-tions, a synchrony on laying dates inthe three stydy sites and inthe two years of sampling was found. The number and density of pairs and nests were superior in the Island that inthe Continent (Villa del Mar and Puerto Cuatreros). The size of the clutch was between one and three eggs (equal mode to two)in three sites, being the Island the only site that had nests with three eggs. The length and the average volume turned out to be mayor in the eggs of the Continent that in those of the Island. The diameter of the nest turned out to be similar both in the Island and in the Continent. The nest of the Island were located preferably near the line of tide of storm whereas those of the Continent were located mainly in an intermediate posi-tion. The majority of the nests in the Island presented a degree of vegetable coberage of more than 75 % of the area, opposite tu coberage of between 25 and 50% for most of the nests of the Continent. The presnce of other colo-nial nesting species in the Island, which may be potentials predators, it might make clear the major degree of vegetable coverage and the major nearness to the line of tide of storm as protection measure of the eggs to eventual assaults, denoting a certain flexibility in the behavior of this species as mechanism of escape opposite to the depredation. The elaboration of the nests turned out to be similar for the nests of the Island and Conti-nent. It was possible to establish that the human presen-ce, as an element of the antropic impact, it is a determi-nant factor in tehe variabilbity of the density of pairs and nests with regard to the position in the Bahía Blanca estuary. The concontrations of six metals found not only in crabs (soft tissues and eggs) but in polychaetes also, did not present significant differences between Villa del Mar and Puerto Cuatreros reinforcing the decision to join, in the Chapter I, both sites forming Continent. There were found detectable levels of copper, cadmium and zinc in crabs (soft tissues and eggs) and polychaetes. The levels of nickel, lead and chromium were detectable only in crabs (soft tissues). The crab eggs presented concentrations of copper, cadmium, nickel and zinc over the detection limit in spring and summer and in the three sites ; lead was detected only in spring of Villa del Mar and Puerto Cuatreros, and chromium was not detectable on both stations and in the tree sites. With the exception of zinc, the concentrations of the metals found in eggs were lower than the detected ones in females. For the case of copper the females showed concentrations two maor orders of magnitude, which would be associated with the increase of the concentration of hemocianine in the adults. There were found detectable levels in the six metals measured in the eggshells of American oystercatchers. The presence of heavy metals so much in the low links (crabs and polychaetes) as the superiors (eggshells of the American oystercatchers) suggests that the metals which are bioavailable in the environment are transferred to the populations of the American opystercatchers of the Bahía Blanca estuary across the trophic chains. The accomplish-ment of this work allowed obtainning very valuable results respect of the biololgy of the American oystercatcher, Haematopus palliatus, in the Bahía Blanca estuary, being this study the first one carried out in the region. On the other hand by the first time there were analyzed, in simultaneous form, the levels of heavy metals in different links of the trophic chin. It is necessary to emphasize that the results obtained for metals in polychaetes are the first precedent for the inner and middle zoneopf th Bahía Blanca estuary.en
