The Helianthus genera include wild and crop species, with biological, genetic and economic importance. H. annuus and H. petiolaris are naturalized and widespread in Central Argentina. Both species behave as weed, may invade crop fields, put at risk the pure seed production and threat the durability of the genetic herbicide tolerance technology, due to the possibility of crop genes transferring. The aim of this thesis was to record the geographical distribution of agrestal H. annuus and H. petiolaris populations in the Central region of Argentina, characterize them phenotypically, determine their viability in the soil seed bank and their herbicide susceptibility. Also, studying an invasive process of an agrestal H. annuus biotype, determine its origin and the interference on sunflower. Finaly, generate strategies to prevent the emergence of Imidazolinone resistant populations and develop technical information for the management of the technology. Annual weeds of the Helianthus genus were found in more than a hundred fields, distributed in five Argentine provinces. The presence of agrestal plants was highly associated with the cultivation of sunflower. La Pampa was the most frequently invaded province, where H. petiolaris populations were mainly found. More than 25 % of the cases were allocated to “off-types” plants, originated in genetic seed contaminants. The phenotypic study did not consistently differentiate between agrestal and ruderal plants of both species. The agrestal H. annuus plants reached the R1 stage one week and their inflorescences finished the flowering more than a month before the ruderal plants. Up to more than 20 % of the buried seed may remain viable for 42 months. One agrestal biotype of H. annuus was found in Tres Arroyos, in a region with no history of ruderal populations. The agrestal biotype showed intermediate phenotype between ruderal and sunflower, therefore an exoferal origin could not be ruled out. In the crop field, the invaded area increased from 8 to 45 ha in four years and reached the density of 11 weeds m-2 in densest patches. Weed competition did not alter the phenology, height and the oil content of sunflower, however the yield components were severely affected, showing a yield decrease of 80 % with 10.7 weeds m-2. To prevent the emergence of Imidazolinene tolerant agrestal Helianthus populations, it should be done a strategic management of AHAS inhibiting herbicides and glyphosate, which could decreased population size. If Imidazolinone tolerant sunflower was cultivated, due to possible exchange of genes with biotype agrestal, the control should be conducted at least during four successive cycles. Thereby estimated probability of emergence of an introgressed plant was less than 5 %.es
