Afforestation has been recommended to recover degraded soils due to the accumulation of organic carbon (OC). Several studies have shown the effect and the importance of OC for maintaining physical and chemical fertility. The soil’s OC content is determined by litter and root biomass input and decomposition losses. The latter depend on the chemical composition of the residues, site conditions, soil properties, and management practices. Very little is known about the impact of afforestation on soil OC in the semiarid Pampa. The objectives of the present study were 1) evaluate the amount and quality of OC accumulated by the implantation of different forest species; 2) evaluate the effects of afforestation on OC levels and soil physical attributes en different soils and climates of the semiarid Pampa; and 3) determine which soil properties explain to a better degree the effects of the same management in different environments and of different managements in the same environment. The experimental work consisted of two stages, the evaluation of the effects of different forest species (Pinus haleppensis with and without ecto-mycorrhiza (PM and PH, respectively), Pinus pinea (PP), Eucalyptus sp. (E), Gleditzia triacanthos (G)) in the same environment, with an agricultural (A) and a virgin (VN) soil as contrasts. In the second stage the effect of one forest species, Pinus haleppensis (PH), referred to an agricultural (A) and a virgin (VN) soil, was studied in seven different environments (Maisonnave (M), Trenel (T), Caleufú (CA), Santa Rosa (SR), General Acha (GA), Victorica (V) and Jaguel del Monte (JM)). A soil profile description was carried out in each treatment, and soil samples were taken to a depth of 6 cm in order to analyze OC contents, soil structure and pore system. The highest OC contents were observed in G, which also affected chemical properties, color, and aggregate structure. On the contrary, soils under E and PP forests had low values for exchangeable bases, base saturation and pH. The main differences were found in the superficial soil horizons. Thus, in the first 6 cm PM and G had the highest total OC and macro-aggregate C contents, and best structural stability and porosity, while A and PP showed least favorable conditions. On the other hand, the data showed a strong relation between OC contents and soil physical parameters. In the comparison between environments, the highest OC levels were found in fine textured soils, which also showed more pronounced differences between management practices. In all treatments OC contents diminished with soil depth, variation that partly explained the differences in other soil attributes such as color, structure, and chemical properties. Although afforestation had some adverse effects on pH and base saturation, compared with A, in general terms, an improvement of most of the chemical and physical properties was found. The loamy textures showed higher differences in terms of OC, structure and porosity between PH and VN compared to A, and in sandy textures no differences between management practices could be determined. The variation in bulk density (DA), particle density (DR) and moisture equivalent (HE) could be explained through the variation in OC contents. The obtained results indicate that afforestation could be considered a recommended practice to improve OC contents and physical conditions of degraded soils, particularly in fine textures in the semiarid Pampa. On the other hand, it is important to take into account the effect of different forest species since PH and G were considerably superior in recovering OC and physical conditions than E or PP.es
