In this work the morphophysiology of the females reproduc-tive system in the Sympterygia species that inhabit the Bahía Blanca estuary is studied, together with some of the biological aspects of their reproduction. The examined material came from campaigns on board and from the landing of the artisanal fishing fleet, through a local enterprise. Both species (S. acu-ta and S. bonapartii) are dioecious. The anatomy of the repro-ductive system is consistent with its reproductive strategy (oviparity) and is similar to that observed in other Rajids. Fe-males have two symmetrical ovaries, closely associated with the epigonal organ (Chondrichthyes exclusive linfomieloid organ). The oocytes are megalecytic. The oogonia are pre-sent only in immature females in S. acuta, and in immature and maturing animals in S. bonapartii. Yolk precursors are probably secreted by the liver and transported through the follicular epithelium. The genital duct system of Sympterygia is similar to that observed in other species of Rajids. The ostia are paired and their structure is consistent with its function of conducting the egg into the oviducts by ciliary action. The functional design of the oviductal glands (OG) is similar to that observed in other oviparous species, and the complexity of the different areas is consistent with its secretory function of the various components of the capsule. The results obtai-ned indicate that in mature females, at least in most cases, the synthesis of the capsule begins before the egg reaches the OG, and even before being ovulated. Sperm storage has been observed in the OG of S. bonapartii, but not in S. acuta. The morphological specializations observed in the uteri of ma-ture females are adaptations that contribute to the process of moving, tanning and sclerotization of the capsule. This indicates that, although capsular components are secreted and assembled in the OG, the capsule acquires its definitive physicochemical characteristics inside the uterus. The featu-res observed in the genital tract of Sympterygia are consis-tent with the current theories that relate the oviparity as the derivative mode and viviparity as the plesiomorphic character. Moreover, sexual dimorphism was found in the maximum total length in both species, with females larger than males. The calculated LT50 for S. acuta was 44.9 cm for males and 47.24 cm for females. The size at first maturity of S. bonapartii was 58 cm for males and 62.5 cm for females. Gravid females of S. acuta were captured during the months of May, June, August, September and November. Females of S. bonapartii carrying eggs were caught in October and November. Both species were simple oviparous, with synchrony in the secretion of both capsules by the OG. The obtained results support the theory that the genus Sympterygia uses the Bahía Blanca estuary as a reproductive, egg laying and breeding area.en
